Trespa Third Thursday: Managing Heat, Air, and Moisture in Contemporary Building Enclosures

Trespa I Arpa Design Centre New York

Date: 15 Mar 2012/6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
Type: Lecture

Contemporary buildings perform very differently from their solid masonry-walled relatives, especially with regards to heat, air, and moisture management.  These buildings rely on multiple barriers (four, to be specific) to control heat, air, water vapor, and liquid water flows and create durable and reliable assemblies.  This presentation reviews the basic principles of building science and examines in-depth the four barrier systems required to control the elements in contemporary walls.   Theory, design, construction, and testing will be evaluated for each barrier.

Speaker:

Sean O’Brien, P.E., LEED AP, Associate Principal, Simpson Gumpertz & Heger.  Specializing in building envelope performance, Mr. O’Brien has published several papers on moisture migration in masonry wall systems and condensation resistance of windows and curtain walls.  He holds bachelor and master degrees in mechanical engineering from Cornell University, is a LEED-accredited professional and licensed professional engineer in 11 states.
